THIS is what is ruining marriage??
Came across a post in a blog today and it infuriated me…It seems that a silly YouTube video depicting a groom updating his relationship status on Facebook from the altar has made msnbc.com blogger Helen A.S. Popkin pin the “death of weddings” on social media.
Here is the video that has in Helen’s opinion, contributed to all that is wrong with romance and the sanctity of weddings and marriage in these times.
Funny right? I mean as far as sins go when it come to the wedding ceremony, I can honestly say that this is by far not the worst I have seen. So then what about this innocent act of fun made it become the poster child for the downfall of society? Well our fearless blogger has pointed a finger at the entire Internet claiming that oneupmanship is the source for crazy wedding day antics.
She makes a point to suggest that people are pulling crazy stunts like this one, to grab 15 minutes of YouTube fame.
Ummmmmmm….I hate to break it to you ma’am, but people have been taking part in bizarre and downright head scratching marriage ceremonies since the invention of the institution.
You say “In the days of dialup, what young man would consider wearing tights, a cape and underwear on the outside and play make-believe in front of not just his parents, bride and in-laws, but all of YouTube and beyond?” And I answer with a resounding… YES!!! Really, where were have you been all your life, you look like you are old enough to have seen themed weddings before they could be readily posted on the Interweb.
You mean to tell me that throughout the 80′s Treckies were donning their Star Fleet uniforms to be famous so “a kajillion jerks” could “Google their love?” Or the millions of couples who have been married in sports themed weddings on the 50 yard line of their favorite football field in full uniform, are you telling me they did it in the name of cyberstardom?
And moreover, if what you are claiming is true…why is it that there are literally hundreds of thousands of weddings a year, and I can’t find that many wacky ceremonies on YouTube, in fact, I can only find a handful. That suggests to me exactly what I assumed the entire time I read your post, there is no logic in your argument and I weep for anyone who shares in your opinion.
In a time when Tiger Woods and the slough of cheating celebrities are doing more in one press conference to ruin the “sanctity” of marriage than the whole of the Internet, for you to attack a few people who have chosen to celebrate THEIR day the way they choose and what’s more, to have fun at a ceremony that is meant to be all about them, is short sighted and insulting.
So what if people want to have a good time at their wedding, so what if they want to post it on YouTube afterwards, what are you the Web’s gatekeeper? Show me stats to back up your point of view, show me how many of the wacky marriages don’t work in the end because heaven forbid, they actually know how to have fun together to start their lives in holy matrimony.
How about you quit pointing fingers at the good guys. There are plenty of people who are actually guilty of ruining the institution of marriage, try wielding your blog in their direction… as for me, I will continue to use mine to defend the sanctity of journalism from the likes of you…
