10 Reasons MY blog sucks
I read ALOT of blogs. I also mix it up with various articles that I find scattered through my morning research which is where I found this. It is essentially a blog post telling me why my blog sucks. So instead of just passively reading this, I went through my posts and picked out an example of each…just to see where I stood. Here are my results listed in order of the blog with a description of the infraction.
- You use syndicated content. – I guess thankfully this is one of the few bullets I dodged. I do not, nor will I ever post syndicated content in my blog. If I am that hard up for a post, I will just go without for the day, I am sure my readers would rather not see a post than read something that they can find somewhere else in its entirety.
- Your blog is boring. – Isn’t boring in the eye of the reader? But I guess if I am being completely honest here I would have to admit that if someone were not in my inner circle there are several posts that might necessitate having a pillow and a teddy bear nearby. One being my first post. My life story is not full of sex, drugs and rock and roll and therefore not of much interest to people who don’t know me from Adam. Also my State of the Stockton Media post…again if your not involved in the movement, over the course of the post, ones eyes might glaze over…just saying.
- Your blog revolves around your person. – The name of the blog is Rod’s Rants is it not? But again for the sake of this exercise, the guilty posts are numerous and are pretty easy to spot. I will not take the time to post them all…you have enough on your hands without having to click on all the extra links.
- Oh no, not your favorite music on auto-play! – Again a not guilty plea from me… I agree with the original post though about how I do not want to hear music when I am visiting a blog site…unless of course the blog is about music, then I expect it. I can promise you, you will not get that from me at anytime, you will always have the option to listen or not to anything on my site.
- You use clip art. – Nothing takes away credibility more than using a picture on a post for the sake of posting a picture, it’s why I shy away from using any media that does not belong to me, or can’t be embedded in the appropriate manner. Looks like I can cross this off of my lists of no-no’s.
- I can’t find the post I want to read. – It took me a while to get the hang of Wordpress, so I remember the first couple of templates I used were clunky, cluttered and confusing so I was guilty of this…but no more. I have figured out how to make a user friendly site that can be navigated simply and effectively. So I guess what I am saying is you can find the post you want to read and #6 does not apply to Rod’s Rants.
- Your writing totally sucks. – I know the writer of the original post was not talking about the writing itself and more about typos, grammatical errors and the likes so here I will say that I have gone back through some old posts and found some glowing errors…corrections will be made as time permits. But he is right, nothing says amateur more than mispeled wurds.
- You’re spinning articles. – Yes I am! But come on, there is only so much news to go around and seeing as though there are already a limited number of bloggers in my area, and many of them already cover the local scene, I have to find other news, that other people are talking about, that’s why it is news. I guess I am wrong. Guilty posts include this one and a couple of others.
- You post once a month. – There are some that probably wish I would, but alas, I try to cram content down your throat four days a week time and life permitting. This is not a hobby for me, I am working hard to become a full time blogger and social media worker. If posted once a month, what would that say about my commitment to my profession.
- Your blog looks like 12023532989 other blogs. - This is a pretty big problem for budget bloggers like myself. There are a gazillion free theme sites out there, but finding one that suits your needs that doesn’t already suit 10 million other bloggers needs is tough. I can only hope that I have picked one of the free themes that is not among the most commonly used and still makes my blog my own.
So there you have it, 10 reasons why Rod’s Rants is the worst blog on the web! I know that usually 4 out of 10 is a failing grade, but since the ramifications of these infractions mean the difference between a successful blogger and one who is writing to a non-existent audience, I will have to say that my 40% is passing.
That is not to say that I am not going to take to heart some of the suggestions made and strive everyday to make this blog one of your daily musts just as much as there are several blogs on my daily read list….Look for big things in 2010 from Rod’s Rants, I hope you will all be pleased!
